Tuukka Verho, M.Sc. (Tech.), will defend the dissertation "Toughness and Flaw Tolerance by Biologically Inspired Approaches" on 17 November 2017 at 12 noon at the Aalto University School of Science, lecture hall AS1, Maarintie 8, Espoo. The dissertation focuses on a nanoclay/polymer nanocomposite that imitates nacre found in seashells. A fabrication method for thick nanocomposite plates was developed and the material's fracture properties and toughness were investigated, as well as its sensitivity to moisture.
