Gravitational waves are a central prediction of the theory of general relativity, formulated by Albert Einstein in 1915. It took over a century until they were directly detected. The discovery made by LIGO is considered extremely important and it opens a whole new window into the universe. It is widely expected in the science community that the LIGO discovery will be awarded the Nobel prize in physics in 2017.

A notable member of LIGO and MIT Assistant Professor Matthew Evans will give a public lecture about the subject "Gravitational wave detection with LIGO" on Thursday 23.3. at 18.30. The event is held at the Töölö campus of Aalto University, Runeberginkatu 14-16. The lecture is directed to the general public, and the entrance is free.

The lecture is part of the Physics Days 2017, jointly organised by the Finnish Physical Society and Aalto University. Physics Days is the annual meeting of Finnish physicists from different fields.
